International Union of Marine Insurance

– Germany, Berlin anno 1874 –

In January 1874, 31 representatives from 39 international marine insurance societies accepted the invitation to Berlin for “a discussion of common interests, to seek agreement on uniform principles in respect of the handling of business”.

This was the first General Assembly of the IUMI.

It was decided within the framework of an association to cooperate and “to work with complete objectivity and with all considerations of competition excluded towards the elimination of all technical deficiencies and encouragement of legislative improvements”.

Above all, in addition to the exchange of technical experience and ideas, it was hoped to have an influence in the sense of a friendly and trusting understanding among colleagues at the same time.
